Lewis: I’d probably KO Fury in one round

lewis323By Scott Gilfoid: 48-year-old Lennox Lewis was amused to see British heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) calling him out yesterday for a fight. Lewis thinks that Fury hasn’t done enough to be calling him out at this point in his career given the weak opposition that Fury’s been facing thus far. Additionally, Lewis thinks he’d still likely KO Fury in one round if he did decide to fight him.

Lewis said to the Telegraph “Why would you want me right now? I’m an old man and you know what, even if I did put on my gloves right now, I’d probably knock him out inside a round.”

Yeah, I agree with Lewis. He’s probably lost a lot of his speed, but even if he’s punching at 60% of what he was 10-years ago when he last fought, he’d make a mess of Fury. I’m sure Lewis hasn’t forgotten how to throw an uppercut, and with the way that Fury likes to lean forward when he’s trying to put his weight on his opponents, Lewis would have plenty of opportunities to land that killer punch on the chin of Fury.

Fury was in a trash talking mood yesterday, as he aimed his venomous laser sights at David Haye, Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. It’s interesting though that Fury didn’t say anything about the talented 6’7″ American Deontay Wilder. I wonder why he didn’t lash out at him? Could it be that Fury may find himself in a situation someday where he’ll have to fight Deontay in order to get a title shot? I think it could be. You don’t want to anger a sleeping giant because an upset Deontay would be dangerous. We saw what he did to former WBO heavyweight champion Sergey Liakhovich recently with his 1st round knockout win over, and we also saw Deontay KO one of Britain’s finest in Audley Harrison.

Yeah, I don’t understand why Fury is such a trash talker. I mean, he hasn’t even beaten anyone good yet, so why is he flapping his gums 24/7 like he’s one of the top elite heavyweights in the division. Heck, Fury is more of a bottom dweller than a top guy in my view. His close call win over Steve Cunningham proved that pretty much.

I have no doubts that Lewis would destroy Fury if he were to come back and fight him on 3 months notice. I don’t know if it would be a 1st round knockout like Lewis said, but I think as soon as Lewis nails Fury with a big overhand right or a big uppercut, Fury would hit the deck. He’d be in serious trouble after he staggered to his feet because Lewis would blast him out with a right hand finisher to the jaw.

It would have been interesting to see how Fury would have done against a prime Lewis from the early 90s. I’d like to think that Fury would have been able to slap his way into the 2nd or 3rd rounds before Lewis got him out of there, but I just can’t see that scenario happening. I just picture Lewis dropping Fury with the first right hand he throws and then finishing him off with a left-right combination after he drunkenly gets back to his feet. I think it would be like Lewis’ win over Frans Botha.
