Khan still not sure if he’ll get Mayweather fight

khan#3By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) could have fought two more times this year and gotten good paydays. But instead he’s remained inactive since his controversial life and death win over Julio Diaz last April in London. Khan is waiting to find out if he’ll get the payday fight of his life against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3rd, and right now Khan is still not even sure if his promoters at Golden Boy will be able to produce that fight for him. As such, Khan could end up with two missed paydays and pretty much a year of his career wasted on him playing it safe waiting for the Mayweather fight.

Khan told Fox Sports 1 “We’re still waiting on a few things. We were looking at a fight against Alexander. That fell through. There’s a lot of talk about the Mayweather fight happening, but at the moment I’ve left it up to my team and Golden Boy. I would love the fight. It would be an amazing fight. It’s a fight I’ve always wanted.”

The Alexander fight fell through because Khan chose not to take it. The fight didn’t fall through due to lack of interest on Alexander’s part or due to a negotiations snag. Khan simply chose not to take the fight in order to sit around and fish for the Mayweather bout. The thing is if Khan doesn’t get the Mayweather fight then he will have royally struck out and wasted a year of his career. Personally, I think that’s a stupid move on his part because the welterweight division is getting stronger, not weaker, and there are better fighters now in the division that would likely tear Khan apart.

By Khan waiting around for a Mayweather fight that might not happen, Khan is using up his career for nothing. He should at least be staying busy by taking on guys like Alexander, Keith Thurman or Marcos Maidana. Heck, I wouldn’t even mind seeing him fight Kell Brook in the UK. At least it would shut Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn up if Khan were to fight him. However, I have a feeling that even if Khan did fight Brook and starch him, Hearn and Brook would be crying for a rematch without end and it would just continue forever.

Mayweather will have to be really desperate for him to be facing Khan because there are so many better qualified contenders in the division than him. I mean, I known Khan is a former two division world champion, but the fact is he’s lost two out of his last four fights and he hasn’t had a solid win since his victory over Zab Judah two years ago. That might as well be a lifetime ago because things have really changed rapidly for Khan’s career with him losing to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. No doubt, Khan has won his last two fights against unranked lightweight Carlos Molina and a WAY past his best Julio Diaz, but those guys aren’t top quality fighters at 140 or 147. Khan doesn’t deserve a fight against Mayweather in my book. He deserves a rematch against Breidis Prescott and Maidana. Khan has unfinished business with both of them.
