Schaefer sure Mayweather-Canelo fight will top 2 million PPV buys

By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer feels confident now after seeing early returns that last Saturday’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight card will top 2 million pay-per-view guys according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael. If it breaks 2 million, it’ll top the all-time cash mark set by Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

Rafael said:

It’s going to be good for Golden Boy Promotions, Showtime/CBS, Mayweather and Canelo if this PPV broadcast does break 2 million. I just hope they start spreading the wealth by lowering the prices of some of their future PPV broadcasts so that the average fan can share on their good fortunes.

I would have been happier paying $30 in PPV to see Mayweather-Canelo and done away with the undercard entirely because the Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse co-feature turned out to be a disappointing hug-fest with Garcia hugging Matthysse for all he was worth for 12 rounds.

The Ishe Smith vs. Carlos Molina fight left a lot to be desired as well. I did like the Pablo Cecar Cano vs. Ashley Theophane fight, but not enough to pay to see that fight. To me that was an ESPN level fight and it wasn’t nearly interesting enough for me to want to pay a ton of green stuff to see it.

Since Golden Boy is making a lot of loot on “The One” card, I would hope they have half off for the next PPV card. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a Mayweather card, because I know the man deserves his money. But the Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana card, I think Golden Boy needs to discount that one steeply to make up for the dull Mayweather-Canelo undercard. I can’t remember when I saw so much holding and running in my life in watching Garcia all over Matthysse with nonstop clinching and running. I could barely keep my eyes open watching that fight.
