Oscar’s blueprint for dummies

floyd784332By Van Dunn: Now that the much hyped Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight is over, and Mayweather Jr. has once again showed the boxing world that he is in a class above everyone else, we can all sit back and chuckle. Chuckle not at the fact that Mayweather totally outclassed the younger, stronger and immensely confident fighter in Alvarez, nor chuckle at how easy that Mayweather made this fight look, or even chuckle at the incompetency of the majority decision empowered by the 114-114 score of a renegade judge.

As I now sit back and review the fight in my head, I keep hearing that earth shattering and mind blowing decree uttered by the great and mighty Golden Boy himself……”I have the blueprint to beat Mayweather”. Now as much of a deep and profound proclamation this appears to be, I can’t help but laugh because Oscar’s blueprint has been proven to be nothing more than “Fools Gold”.

It is incredulous enough that Oscar would say such a thing when he himself lost his fight with Mayweather, but to actually persuade the Mayweather detractors into believing that he has some sort of master plan to defeat Mayweather is ridiculous at the least and comical at best. Can all of the Mayweather haters be honest with themselves and review the Mayweather vs. Oscar fight and inspect the blueprint for themselves. Sure Oscar gave Floyd a very tough fight …initially, but as Mayweather has said before, his fights are not sprints but marathons, and he knows how to adjust to the early bursts of his opponents and adapt to finish his matches ahead of his foes. Just ask Ricky Hatton, Zab Judah and Shane Mos.

Floyd agreed to the ring size and the glove size when he fought Oscar and agreed to move up in weight to fight Oscar at light middleweight…..a division that he had never fought at before. The total power punches thrown by Oscar in that fight was 341 compared to only 241 by Mayweather, yet it was Floyd who connected on 138 of his power punches, while Oscar only connected on 82 of his. What part of Oscar’s blueprint teaches you to throw 100 more power punches than your opponent but allow your opponent to connect on almost 60 more than you? That is a 57% rate using far less energy as opposed to a 24% rate working twice as hard.

Folks, there ain’t nothing in that part of the blueprint that teaches you how to win. Make no mistake about the fact that Oscar fought Floyd as best as he could, but he did not beat him nor provide the blueprint to do so, and those that have followed this “blueprint” have all come away as Oscar did….with a loss. Canelo Alvarez was the latest to be given the blueprint by Oscar and Canelo followed the blueprint perfectly.

Alvarez threw 232 power punches compared to 175 power punches thrown by Floyd. Yet again, it was Floyd who connected on 93 of his power punches compared to 73 by Canelo…..a 53% rate advantage compared to 31%. I guess Oscars blueprint does work like a charm….if you choose to work as twice as hard as your opponent but look foolishly doing so by being almost as twice as ineffective as them.

Floyd has four more fights to honor with Showtime and we can bet that along with Floyd’s next opponent, Oscar will be sure to offer his blueprint again, but his pupil should look Oscar in the eye, pat him on the back, and chuckle along with the rest of us and just let him know that his blueprint isn’t as golden as he would have us to believe.
