By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) has gone into overdrive in talking himself up for a potential fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) for next May. Khan says he’s got better hand speed than Mayweather, and he thinks that will be the reason why he’ll beat him. Khan is pretty fast you have to admit, but he fights like he has no sense whatsoever a lot of the time. Against a fighter that knows what he’s doing like Mayweather, this could be a real slaughter.
Instead of realizing that he has a fight against Devon Alexander on December 7th that he’ll likely lose, Khan is looking past that fight towards his dream bout against Mayweather. Khan wants the fight with Mayweather so badly he can taste it, but the problem is there is a formidable opponent in Devon Alexander that’s standing in his way to getting to his pot of gold fight.
Khan said to the Telegraph “I know my speed will count against him. That is something I believe 100 percent. We are the super stars of boxing, and once I have Devon Alexander out of the way, it will be Mayweather for me…you have to fight him at his own game….you have to use your speed. He needs to fight someone as quick as him, and I know that I am quicker than him.”
With the big money fight against Mayweather potentially waiting for him in May, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Khan winning a controversial decision over Alexander in December. We saw Khan get a very questionable win over Julio Diaz last April in London in a fight that Diaz appeared to win, so I could see Khan being given the benefit of the doubt against Alexander if the fight goes to the cards. As long as Khan is able to stay on his feet for most of the fight, I can see him getting a win even if he’d dominated. A Khan-Mayweather fight means a lot of money, and I think it might be tough on Alexander to get a decision with that fight waiting for Khan.
My advice for Alexander is to make sure he knocks Khan out in this fight because he doesn’t need to be on the receiving end of a terrible decision. Khan is the bigger name in this fight and when you have one fighter that is more popular than the other, that’s when you see controversial decisions. Alexander can make that doesn’t happen to him by knocking Khan out cold on December 7th.
