Gerber: If Chisora slaps me, I can’t guarantee his safety

gerber565By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Dereck Chisora (17-4, 11 KO’s) might want to think twice before making the decision to slap his opponent Edmund Gerber (23-1, 14 KO’s) at their weigh-in this Friday because Gerber is hinting that he’ll retaliate if that happens. Chisora and Gerber will be facing each other this Saturday for the vacant EBU heavyweight title at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Hackney Wick, in London, United Kingdom.

Last year in February, Chisora slapped WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko across the face when the two came together for a stare down during the weigh-in, and before the fight, Chisora spit water into the face of Vitali’s brother Wladimir Klitschko. And to top if off, Chisora got involved in a brawl with David Haye after the fight. It was wild and very bizarre behavior from Chisora before and after the fight.

Both Vitali and Wladimir kept their cool and let Chisora get away with these aggressive acts but it doesn’t look Gerber has the same self control because he’s hinting pretty bad that he may do something if Chisora slaps him.

Gerber told RingTV “He [Chisora] might play around with the likes of the Klitschkos but trying to slap me with his open hand he should not. Where I am coming from, people see this as humiliation. I have nothing against a little fistic discussion, but if he slaps me, I cannot guarantee his safety.”

Oh man, I hope Chisora doesn’t blow a rod and get weird at the weigh-in because I’d hate to see him get decked by the hard hitting Gerber. This guy comes from Kazakhstan and he’s plenty tough. He may not be the best heavyweight in the world, but he’s could enough to mess things up for Chisora if he gets in one of his slapping moods. I would guess that Gerber might not take too kindly to the idea of Chisora spitting water in his face or kissing him on the mouth either.

As far as the fight goes, I see this as a toss up bout. Chisora has lost four out of his last seven fights, and he’s clearly a B level fighter that is fighting a similar type opponent on Saturday with Gerber. This could be a life and death type battle for Chisora. I just hope if there’s any knockdowns that the referee actually counts to 10 before he chooses to stop the fight because I’d hate to see another fighter stopped on the 9 count again. I don’t care who gets knocked out in the fight, I just want to see the referee correctly count to 10 before he halts the fight.
