Chavez Jr. not interested in Vera rematch

chavez777By Dan Ambrose: Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KO’s) sounded desperate for a rematch against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) after his 10 round unanimous decision loss last night. Repeatedly while being interviewed by HBO, Vera said he hoped that Chavez Jr. would give him a rematch so that he could whip him again and get credit for it.

While a lot of boxing fans are indeed interested in seeing Chavez Jr. and Vera fight again, Chavez Jr. isn’t one of them. He says the fight wasn’t close, and that he doesn’t need to prove anything by fighting Vera again.

Chavez Jr. said after last night’s fight:

In Chavez Jr’s mind, it was one-sided enough for him to move on rather than giving Vera a rematch like Chavez Jr. did against Matt Vanda and Carlos Molina, two fighters that Chavez Jr. fought in the past in bouts that ended in controversial decisions the first time around.

I thought Chavez Jr. lost to both Vanda and Molina in their first fights. The judges feel that way though and they gave Chavez Jr. a draw against Molina and a win over Vanda. I guess nothing has changed with Chavez Jr. still winning getting the benefit of the doubt when it comes to decisions.

Vera said this today to Sergio Mora on his twitter “Life goes on bro. Maybe we can do it again for millions after I f*** Chavez up again bro!”

It looks like it hasn’t fully sunken in with Vera that Chavez Jr. has absolutely no interest in giving him a rematch. He’s already said it, and it’s doubtful that he’ll change his mind about it. Chavez Jr. wants to fight for a world title at super middleweight, and Vera doesn’t have anything to offer him. Besides that, Chavez Jr. realizes that he has has everything to lose against Vera.

That’s one of the things that Chavez Jr. mentioned repeatedly in the run up to the Vera fight in saying that it was a fight where he wouldn’t get much in winning it, and he would lose a ton if he were to have been beaten.

Chavez Jr. was beaten, but he just wasn’t given an official loss on his record. It looks like he doesn’t temp fate by fighting Vera again, because the judges might not be willing to side with him if the fight has a similar pattern as last night’s fight between them.
