Canelo: I’ve figured out Mayweather

canelo887By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) maybe only 23-years-old and vastly inexperienced compared to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26, KO’s), but he still thinks he’s got the magical plan to beat Mayweather. Canelo isn’t saying whether this brilliant plan was thought up by himself, his trainers or Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions. I’m hoping for Canelo’s sake that he didn’t get this gem of a plan from Oscar, because it might be recipe for Canelo getting embarrassed rather than the ‘W.”

Canelo told the Boston Herald “I’ve figured him [Mayweather] out. I can’t wait to get up in the ring. It’s going to be a tough, difficult fight, but I have advantages and I’ve been working on those things that will be difficult. I have to stay calm. Other people have gotten desperate against him. You must be patient.”

Being calm wins the fight for Canelo I guess; at least that’s what Canelo seems to think.

Unfortunately I don’t think being calm is the answer for Canelo beating Mayweather tonight. That sounds like an Oscar plan. Is that all Canelo has in his tool box is being calm? If so, that’s kind of a miserably sad plan. It’s nice to be calm, but when Mayweather is whipping your backside I think it’s important not to be calm. It’s not as if Canelo is trying out for acting job as Spock stand in.

Canelo needs to not be calm, because he almost gave away his last fight against Austin Trout by being calm.

Canelo also looked poor in his wins over Alfonso Gomez, Ryan Rhodes and Matthew Hatton by being calm. I wonder if being calm for Canelo is code for him taking it easy so that he doesn’t gas out if he expends a little bit of energy. It’s no secret that Canelo has major stamina problems that has plagued him since he turned pro. But still being calm isn’t going to get Canelo a victory over Mayweather. It might get Canelo victory over Matthew Hatton or Josesito Lopez, but not Mayweather.

If Canelo gets beaten tonight by being calm then he’s going to need to look at his mistaken beliefs about how he approaches his fights because fighting in 2nd gear all night long isn’t going to get the job done against the better fighters. You’ve got to shift through the gears. If all Canelo has is 1st and 2nd gear then I feel sorry for him, because that’s not going to do the job against the good fighters.
