Is Pacquiao now ready for Mayweather?

pac11111By By Babatis Banda: Is this for real or just posturing? What has happened for Pacquiao to be so interested in fighting Mayweather now? Does this mean that Pacquiao is so sure that the reasons the fight never took place the past few years are now easy to resolve? What is really happening in Manny’s camp of late because Roach, Arum and Pacquiao are all blabbering Mayweather?

A hundred and one questions for sure, but I really don’t know if anyone can answer them. Here is what I really think. Pacquiao at this moment has nothing to lose because he has already lost what can possibly be lost at this stage. If he fights Floyd and loses, it would just be a confirmation of what many people have known for a long time and he will retire with the largest cheque of his career. However, if he happens to win, no one will ever talk about Bradley or Marquez again, Pacquiao would then retire with his tail up. This would be a redemption fight that is necessary at all cost and it is a win-win situation for Pacquiao.

On Mayweather’s part, it is a lose-lose situation. If he beats up Pacquiao, people will say fine, all we wanted was to see the fight. Others will say Pacquiao was already softened up by Marquez. If Floyd losses, then he losses big time. People will now say Floyd avoided Pacquiao all these years because he knew he would loss. Whatever the case, this fight makes sense for Pacquiao more than it does for Floyd.

Remember how Pacquiao looked the other way and fought Bradley instead of Mayweather, making it clear that he did not need Mayweather? Pacquiao’s team made it clear that they were equally big and did not need Mayweather.

Pacquiao went his way and so did Floyd. Without doubt, Floyd emerged the winner in this situation because Pacquiao went to register a loss against Bradley and met a near death situation against Marquez. Never mind if it was a lucky punch or not, that is the whole essence of boxing, to hurt your man. Mayweather in the same time signed the most lucrative contract ever in the sport and became the highest paid athlete in all sport.

In this day and time, Pacquiao is now in a much worse situation than he was at that time. He has no leverage what so ever against negotiations with Floyd. This is the moment Mayweather will want Pacquiao to realise that he is in a losing situation. First, it will have to be a full RBT with no ‘windows’. Second, Pacquiao will have to accept a much smaller purse than the 40 million Floyd had offered him and each time Pacquiao turns him down, the situation gets even worse the next time.

You may say that Pacquiao is calling out Mayweather. Yes he is, but there is nothing else he can do at this stage, he is at the very wrong end of a very long stick. If Pacquiao is really serious, he should be willing to fall in line with a situation that will require him to shelve his little ego and really try to regain his pride by beating the best boxer in the world today. In short, if Pacquiao is serious, he will have to throw-out all his pride out of the window, and then go out through the door to pick it up.
