Daniel Jacobs stops Giovanni Lorenzo in 3rd round

lorenzo11By Jim Dower: #9 WBO middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs (26-1, 23 KO’s) continued with his long slow climb back to the top with a 3rd round TKO on Monday night of former middleweight title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo (32-6, 24 KO’s) to capture the vacant WBC Continental Americas middleweight title in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Best Buy Theater, in New York, New York, USA.

Jacobs, 26 knocked Lorenzo down with a nice right hand bomb in the 3rd round after having stunned him with a scorching left hook to the head moments earlier. The fight was then stopped at 2:05 of the round by referee Steve Willis.

It really wasn’t much of a fight because Lorenzo hasn’t done much in a while in the division, and this was more of a tune-up fight than anything for Jacobs. At this point it’s still questionable whether Jacobs has the talent to ever win a world title at 160 lbs. Jacobs was badly exposed when Golden Boy Promotions tried to step him up from the weak opposition they’d been feeding him by putting him in with Dmitry Pirog. Jacobs was stopped in the 5th round in that fight, and that was the last time he fought a good opponent. Jacobs has fought six times since then all against weak opposition, and tonight’s fight was no different.

If Golden Boy wants Jacobs fight for a title, they’re going to have to be more selective next time because he doesn’t look as sharp as he was back in 2010, and he was easily handled then by Pirog. If Golden Boy puts Jacobs in with Sergio Martinez, Peter Quillin or Gennady Golovkin, he’ll likely get knocked out by all three of them. Jacobs might have a chance against newly crowned IBF middleweight champion Darren Barker, but there’s a long line that Jacobs would have to wait in before he’ll get a shot against that title. It would take years before he gets a shot at the IBF belt, and by then it’ll likely be a good fighter instead of Barker. Jacobs might not do well if it’s someone with power and skills.
