demarco56By Eric Thomas: Former WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-3-1, 21 KO’s) will be fighting for the first time in 9 months since his 8th round TKO loss to Adrien Broner last November. DeMarco, 27, will be facing light welterweight Fidel Monterrosa Munoz (31-7-1, 25 KO’s) at the Hipódromo Caliente, Arena Tecate, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

This could be a tough fight for DeMarco, because Munoz gave a prime version of Humberto Soto all he could handle in losing to him by a 12 round unanimous decision three years ago in 2010.

Munoz, 25, hasn’t had the best of luck since then, because he’s lost to Soto in a rematch, Fernando Castaneda, Claudio Alfredo Olmedo, Pablo Cesar Cano, and Roberto Ortiz. Munoz was a lot better at lightweight than he is at light welterweight.

DeMarco is trying to get big in the thick of things, and he’s picking the right time to do it now that it appears Broner won’t be coming back to the lightweight division. If DeMarco can keep winning, he could go after his old WBC lightweight title if he can get past WBC interim lightweight champion Omar Figueroa.

There are other titles to go after in the lightweight division. WBA champion Richard Abril, IBF champion Miguel Vazquez and WBO champion Ricky Burns. DeMarco’s power would give Figueroa a lot of problems if he were able to get take him into the deeper rounds the way that Nihito Arakawa did recently.

DeMarco didn’t fight the best fight against the heavier Broner. Instead of using movement, DeMarco stood directly in front of Broner for 8 rounds and it cost him the fight. He may not have won even if he had used movement, but it at least would have given him a better shot at winning.

DeMarco is going to have to work on that part of his game because he’s not going to be able to blast through all of the fighters in the lightweight division with his power alone. He’s going to have to learn how to box some of them, and avoid getting hit so much.
