matthysse84By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer will be making an important announcement tomorrow, and it’s thought that he’ll be revealing that the fight between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia 26-0, 16 KO’s) and WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) is a done deal for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight card on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Schaefer told NYFightBlog today that he wanted to finish the Garcia-Matthysse fight negotiations before he left for Saturday’s trip to Dubai to set up the venue for the Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander fight for December 7th. It would seem that Schaefer has finished the Garcia vs. Matthysse deal and is ready to announce it.

This is what Dan Rafael feels as well.

Having the Matthysse vs. Garcia as the co-feature bout on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card will make this an even bigger card than it already is. Boxing fans that were sitting on the fence about whether or not they should purchase the card may choose to purchase it once they learn that Golden Boy Promotions has added Matthysse-Garcia to the card.

Now only thing the card needs is to add the Austin Trout vs. Erislandy Lara fight as the third bout on the card. There’s talk that fight could be on the card as well.

Matthysse has wanted to get a shot against Danny Garcia ever since his upset 4th round TKO win over former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Amir Khan last year in April. Matthysse has been ignored by Garcia and has had to sit back and watch Garcia fight two older fighters in Erik Morales and Zab Judah instead of giving him a chance.

Matthysse is the interim WBC 140 lb. champion, so the only way Garcia could get out of fighting him would be to vacate the WBC title. He’s not going to do that, and tomorrow we should hear some good news from Schaefer about the Garcia-Matthysse fight being a done deal.
