Atlas wants Broner vs. Matthysse

broner#1By Allan Fox: ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas said last night that he wants to see newly crowned WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) matched against the power punching WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 Ko’s) to see how Broner would react to fighting someone with huge power that Matthysse has.

Atlas said on ESPN “Broner and Matthysse. A lot of people out there hate Broner. I love his talent. He’s still got a lot of talent. He’s got a big mouth, he’s very brash, he’s very arrogant. I’ve love to see Matthysse and him fight. Matthysse looks like a destructive machine; a guy coming forward, a guy with big power. I think a lot of people want to see him put one of his gloves inside of the mouth of Broner.”

As much as boxing fans would like to see this fight get made, it’s probably not realistic to expect Broner to take that fight. Matthysse would definitely agree to the fight, because he needs a big name like Broner for him to get to the next level in the sport.

However, Broner’s adviser Al Haymon and/or Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions may not be so happy to put Broner in with a guy like Matthysse. Broner has the potential to be a super star and huge pay per view attraction.

Matthysse is a million miles away from becoming that kind of a fighter despite having an arguably more people pleasing fighting style and being the more dominating fighter in his own weight class.

Broner is simply the more popular fighter compared to Matthysse and it doesn’t seem to matter that Broner likely isn’t even the 3rd best fighter in the welterweight division. Matthysse might be the best at 140, and if he’s not the best then he’s #2.

Broner isn’t at that level at 147. Perhaps he will be in the future but not right now. You’d have to favor the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Keith Thurman, Kell Brook, Amir Khan and Devon Alexander over Broner at this point.
