Six U.S. boxers victorious in Puerto Rico
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Just two days after winning the team trophy at the Cheo Aponte Tournament, Team USA returned to the ring for the first day of the Olympic Cup in Salinas, Puerto Rico. All six U.S. boxers competing in day one action in Puerto Rico emerged victorious on Monday night.
Unlike the Cheo Aponte Tournament, light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.) kicked off the Olympic Cup for his United States team. His Olympic Cup opener enjoyed a similar outcome to his Saturday outing as he once again enjoyed a unanimous decision against a Puerto Rican opponent. Davila won a 3-0 decision over Puerto Rico’s Anthony Chacon in their light flyweight contest.
Female flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) continued her stoppage streak in her bout on Monday in the Olympic Cup. Fuchs stopped Puerto Rico’s Rose Matos in the second round of their contest to take another victory in Puerto Rico.
In men’s flyweight action, Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.) bounced back from his final round loss in the Cheo Aponte Tournament with a victory in his first bout of the Olympic Cup. Simpson won a 3-0 decision over Puerto Rico’s Jan Lopez in the third bout of the night for Team USA.
Bantamweight Eduardo Martinez (Aurora, Ill.) earned his first victory in Puerto Rico on Monday following his opening bout elimination from the Cheo Aponte Tournament. Martinez defeated Hector Marrero of Puerto Rico by a 3-0 margin to take the international victory.
The final U.S. bout of the night took place in the men’s lightweight division as Luis Sedano (Duarte, Calif.) faced off with Nestor Bravo of Puerto Rico. Sedano won a third round TKO over Bravo after the bout was stopped due to a bloody nose.
Heavyweight Michael Hilton’s (Trenton, N.J.) won on walkover due to his opponent pulling out of their bout.
