Malignaggi: Broner should give me a rematch; people know who really won

malignaggi454By Eric Thomas: Former WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) feels he should have been given the decision in his title defense against Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) last Saturday night, and he wants a rematch with him.

Malignaggi thinks the fans who saw the fight know who really won that fight, and he wants a second chance to prove that he’s the better fighter.

Malignaggi said this as quoted by USAtoday.com “He would give me a rematch because he knows who won that fight. I think the majority of people who once they’re not influenced by the Compu-box numbers, which are total BS anyway, you know who really won that fight.”

The judges gave Broner the win by a 12 round split decision with Broner getting the scores of 115-113 and 117-111 for him, and 115-113 for Malignaggi.

Malignaggi says he may opt to retire unless Broner chooses to fight him again. Malignaggi may need to speak with his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions because they’re the ones that are making Broner’s fights. Malignaggi may also have to speak with Broner’s adviser Al Haymon because he’s also a huge part in Broner’s match-making.

Haymon might not see it being advantageous to Broner’s career to go backwards to fight Malignaggi again when he already beat him. There are bigger fights out there for Broner than facing Malignaggi again, and it’s probable that Golden Boy will be seeing things along the same lines as Haymon in this regard.

If there’s a choice between matching Broner against Malignaggi in a rematch or in a fight against Marcos Maidana, the #2 WBA contender, Maidana will probably be the guy that gets that fight because he’s got good power, and he brings a lot of excitement to his fights.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wants Broner to fight Maidana next. It’s not known yet if Haymon likes this fight, but it’s one of the possibilities right now for Broner. Malignaggi’s name hasn’t been mentioned for a rematch with Broner.

Malignaggi will have to think about fighting his way back into position for another title shot if he wants to try and recapture his WBA title. Broner will likely be moved forward with his career rather than having him put in a lot of time in facing Malignaggi again.
