Maidana: I can knock Adrien Broner out

maidana32434By Allan Fox: #2 WBA, Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) is gunning for newly crowned WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) after learning that he defeated Paulie Malignaggi last Saturday night by a 12 round split decision last Saturday night to capture his WBA title.

Maidana likes the match-up with the 5’7” Broner and he feels he can knock the Mayweather-like Broner out if that fight gets put together by Golden Boy Promotions. It likely will get made because Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer will be meeting with Maidana’s manager tomorrow to discuss making the fight.

Maidana said to ESPN Deportes “Many say that Broner is the new Mayweather, and now he’s the WBA welterweight champion. Then I want to fight him…hopefully they can make the fight…it would be a tough fight but I know I would knock him out.”

Broner would likely have a tough, tough time with Maidana because he doesn’t move much and he doesn’t seem capable of moving. Broner’s fighting style mostly involves him throwing pot shots against fighters that don’t have a lot of power and who aren’t looking to take his head off the way that Maidana would be for 12 rounds.

I’m not so certain that Broner would succeed in making Maidana miss with his big power shots for 12 rounds by leaning backwards like he did against Malignaggi last Saturday night. It’s going to take some brawling for Broner to win this fight and a much higher work rate than the one that he showed against Malignaggi.

Maidana has struggled in the past against fighters with fast hands in defeats against Amir Khan and Devon Alexander. Broner has good hand speed too, but he’s not as fast as those fighters and he doesn’t throw combinations the way that Khan and Alexander does.

Maidana destroyed Josesito Lopez this month by a 6th round TKO in an exciting fight from start to finish. Lopez threw some really nice combinations but in the end he was simply not strong enough to stand up to Maidana’s huge head shots for 12 rounds.

It’ll be interesting to see how Broner handles getting hit by Maidana’s big power shots.
