By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) says he’s been guaranteed a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year if he can beat IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in December.
Khan said he’d also be open to facing Lucas Matthysse at a catch-weight if the Alexander match-up doesn’t happen in December.
The Alexander-Khan fight isn’t signed yet for the December, but Alexander said that he wants to face Khan next.
Khan said to Kugan Cassius of I Film London “If I win my next fight [in December], it’s Floyd Mayweather fight. I’ve been guaranteed that. I’ve got one more obstacle to pass against Alexander and I’ll get Mayweather fight.”
The Khan-Alexander bout is the one that Golden Boy Promotions wants because it gives Khan a chance to pick up the International Boxing Federation 147 lb. title and then that would make a Mayweather-Khan scrap a unification fight instead of just a regular title defense by Mayweather.
It is kind of scary that Khan will be getting a big money shot against Mayweather simply by beating Alexander, because Khan has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and usually you’d want someone to be in a better position career-wise when they’re facing Mayweather in a pay per view fight.
There’s something a little off putting about having to pay money on PPV to see Mayweather fight someone that has 2 defeats in the past two years like Khan.
As far as entertainment goes, I think Mayweather-Khan would be an entertaining fight; certainly a lot better than Mayweather’s recent bout against the slow as molasses Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. That was an awful fight. Guerrero was so slow and upright, and not even in the same class as Mayweather. Canelo-Mayweather is definitely a good duel, but I think Khan vs. Mayweather is decent. I just don’t like the idea of that fight being a PPV bout because of all the losses Khan has had recently.
