Froch: I’ve got other options than Ward for my next fight

froch305By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) came out with some confusing statements in an interview with the BBC Sports on Saturday. First off, Froch said he’d be willing to fight WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in the United States in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This was a reverse course for Froch, who had previously said he would only fight Ward in the UK, because Froch had lost a fight to Ward two years ago in the U.S in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Okay, so in Froch’s next comment he said Ward isn’t the one that he’s looking to fight next.

Instead, he’s hoping to fight someone else. If Ward wants a fight with Froch, he’s going to have to wait. In other words, nothing has changed. Froch still doesn’t appear to be interested in facing Ward in his next fight and you can take that any way you want it.

Froch said to the BBC Sport at bbc.co.uk “Let’s keep [Ward] on ice at the minute because I’ve got other options. He is still in his rehab with his shoulder so I can probably get a fight in before Christmas and then in the spring or summer next year we can have a massive showdown with Ward.”

Froch is talking about a year from now for the Ward fight instead of at the end of this year. Believe me, Ward would and could be ready to fight Froch at the end of the year. He doesn’t need to keep rehabbing his shoulder at that point.

It’s not as if he tore up the joint or tore a rotator cuff. It was a fairly simple operation and he’ll be more than ready to face the likes of Froch in November or December or probably even September if need be.

I think Froch wants the rematch with Mikkel Kessler, but if that’s going to happen, Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn is likely going to have to entice Kessler to take it by offering him more money than he got last time and the only way he’s going to do that is by offering him a bigger percentage cut. Hearn is probably going to have to sweeten the deal by opening his purse and pulling out a lot more green stuff if he wants to get Kessler to keep fighting Froch over and over in the UK instead of in a neutral venue.

If we’re talking about pretty much the same amount of revenue to slice of as last time, then Kessler is going to have to get a bigger percentage cut of the deal for him to make more than he did last time. I mean, I can’t see the fight bringing in more pay per view money this time then it was last time because it’s the same pool of fans that will be purchasing it and Kessler didn’t fight hard enough for the full 12 rounds to make the fight exciting enough for additional fans to want to pay to see it.
