David Price vows not to make the same mistake against Tony Thompson

price46By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) has worked on his game for the past several months to iron out the mistakes that he made last time he fought 41-year-old Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s), and he’s convinced that he won’t make the same mistake again when he faces Thompson in less than two weeks on July 6th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Price said to Sky Sports Ringside “I have worked a lot on tactics and I am confident that I won’t make the same mistake twice, and that will get the job done and move on, but I think I can look good doing it.”

Lennox Lewis has been helping Price out, pointing out his mistakes, fixing them, and working on his conditioning. However, I’m still not so sure that it’s going to work out well for the 6’8” Price in this fight because the 6’5” southpaw Thompson is nearly as big as him, and he’s not going to get bowled over like the terrible opposition that Price built up his inflated resume on before getting knocked out in the 2nd round by Thompson last February.

What we learned in the Price-Thompson fight last February was that Price can dish it out, but he’s not so good when it taking it. That fight was like watching a baseball game where a team has their at bat and hits a few singles, but when the other team gets their chance at bat, they hit home runs.

That’s what essentially happened. Price was all over Thompson in the 1st and 2nd rounds, nailing him with a lot of shots, but once Thompson opened up with his own offense in the 2nd, Price hit the deck and the fight was over.

It was just like that. It kind of reminded me of how Price was stopped by Roberto Cammarelle in the Olympics. Price looked great in that fight until Cammarelle started nailing him and then it was over. Price was dishing it out just fine but when it was Cammarelle’s turn to throw punches, Price was sent flying into the ropes and was stopped.
