Atlas: Broner will be too strong for Malignaggi

It’s just too bad that Broner will likely destroy the 32-year-old Malignaggi.

ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas is one of many people who see Broner as simply being too strong for the light hitting Malignaggi to beat.

Atlas said last night on ESPN “Paulie Malignaggi isn’t a puncher, and for people who think he has a chance in what would be a pretty significant upset, if they’re looking for him to be the bigger fighter, wrong. He and Broner turned pro at lightweight. He [Malignaggi] has to move side to side, punch and move, punch and move to the side. I think Broner will be too strong and will find a way to win the fight.”

Atlas’ advice is pretty sound advice for Malignaggi, but I don’t think it’s going to work tonight. It might work initially to keep Broner from nailing him with big shots, but sooner or later, Broner is going to adapt to what Malignaggi is doing and nail him with either a left hook or a right hand while Malignaggi is coming in looking to land one of his jabs.

It’ll only take one good shot from Broner to stun Malignaggi and once he’s got him dazed, Broner will pour it on like he did against Antonio DeMarco and Gavin Rees to get the stoppage win.

Malignaggi has been handled pretty well by Golden Boy in his recent fights, especially in having him fight a fringe contender like Pablo Cesar Cano in his first title defense of his World Boxing Association 147 lb. title rather than having Malignaggi fight someone that’s relevant.

Cano was a young guy that Erik Morales took apart two years ago. There was no point in Malignaggi fighting the guy in a title defense other than giving Malignaggi a title-milking fight.
