ward48By Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday, WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) will begin sparring for the first time since injuring his shoulder last December. Ward, 29, had surgery on his right shoulder on January 4th of this year to repair a small tear. The surgery was a success and he’s been rehabbing slowly ever since.

Ward said on his twitter “Last piece of the puzzle goes down tomorrow morning. First sparring session since the injury.”

Ward injured his shoulder while training to get ready for a January 26th fight against Kelly Pavlik. The fight had to be scrapped unfortunately and Pavlik soon retired from boxing.

I guess the injury was a good thing for Pavlik because he would have been schooled badly by Ward and it wouldn’t have been worth it for him.

Ward is reportedly looking at possibly changing promoters, according to Dan Rafael. Ward wants to fight former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and if he were to sign with Top Rank, the promoter that promotes Chavez Jr, Ward could possibly get that fight.

It’s not much of a fight to be honest because Chavez Jr. has already been exposed by Sergio Martinez last September and he’s no longer a champion. In fact, Chavez Jr. hasn’t fought since and there’s talk that he’ll be fighting Brian Vera in September.

Ward is in a bad situation as far as the super middleweight division goes. He’s already beat everyone that’s worth mentioning and the only thing he has to look forward to is beating the obscure contenders.

For some reason, Ward is interested in fighting guys he already beat previously like Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler, but neither of those guys are in a hurry to get in the ring with him and taste defeat for a second time.

One option Ward does have is a fight against WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson if he’s willing to fight him at 175. It would be a good fight and it might be the only interesting fight that Ward has to look forward to for the next year or so unless he signs with Top Rank, and that’s kind of an iffy thing.
