Again, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said something but meant another

floyd#11By Juan dela Cruz: Floyd Mayweather Jr is known to say something but having a different meaning. It might be his smokescreen to hide something, but whatever, it is not good for a person of his stature. If we could remember, when Pac-Floyd fight started to brew up among sport fans and writers, Floyd said all Manny Pacquiao has to do is to step up on the plate and call his name.

After Pacquiao called him out, Floyd then made several ridiculous demands that stalled the dream fight, and we already knew what happened after then. There was also an instance during the Floyd-Ortiz pre-fight conference when Floyd said that after Victor, Pacquiao will be next, of which, Floyd denied having said that the next day despite the fact that Floyd made such statement in front of a crowd and boxing scribes who were in attendance at that time.

Again, as the saying goes, history repeats itself. Here’s what Floyd said in February 2012 before he faced Miguel Cotto at 154-pound limit.

Just recently, when criticism and bashing started to fly in the net about Floyd’s hypocrisy, Mayweather Jr was quick to respond. According to him, it was Saul Alvarez camp who wanted the catchweight of 152 pounds for their fight.

Thanks to other writers and sports fans who denigrate this. Floyd, at least, was forced to allow the fight even at a couple of pounds higher although still the benefit is at Floyd’s side.

So again, it was clear that Mayweather Jr said something but he meant another. The question is, why Cotto at 154 but not Canelo? If we are going to look at their vital stats, Floyd has 1.73 meters in height with 72 inches in reach, Canelo is also 1.73 meters tall with shorter reach of 71 inches, while Cotto is 1.70 meters tall with a reach of 67 inches. Here, basically, the three has almost the same stats but we all wonder, why Canelo has to sacrifice 2 pounds of weight (that’s too much for any fighter) but not Cotto?

The answer is simple. Cotto was past his prime and hadn’t proved anything at 154 that’s why Floyd faced him at that weight. All Cotto has got at 154 are wins against old Mayorga, one-legged Yuri Foreman and past his prime and washed-up Margarito. Floyd knew Cotto can’t bring anything at that weight that’s why Floyd agreed to face Cotto at 154 with no catchweight. But against Canelo, who is a sure threat to Floyd, Mayweather Jr knew Saul is a force to reckon with at jr middle, that’s why, all the advantages should be at The Money’s side, hence, Canelo has to move down. And why no rehydration clause? Simply because Floyd wanted Saul to rehydrate to heavier weight making Canelo slow. When a fighter rehydrates, he brings only weights, mostly fluids, but not muscles. Imagine a fighter at 152 pounds during weigh in and then 172 at fight night, that’s 20 pounds of fluids, and not muscles! It’s a whole lot different if the fight would be at 154.

So now, where’s the “give-me-the-guys-where-they-are-comfortable-at-their-weight-so-there-are-no-excuses” principle of Floyd Mayweather Jr? None! And we could notice this in many of Floyd’s fights. The advantages were always in his side and I don’t need to mention them because the whole world already witnessed Floyd’s grade-A cherrypicking talent. Unlike Manny Pacquiao who meets his opponent halfway their respective weights (due to Pacquiao’s small frame and lesser weight) to make it an even playing field, Floyd is afraid of threats that’s why he needs advantages to subdue them and retain his “0” loss record.

People are wondering, when could they see Floyd face real challenges. Mayweather Jr is forgetting something. In every fight, boxing or otherwise, it is not only about winning, it’s about how you compose yourself against those challenges and how you deal with your losses, if there will be any. That’s what makes a man great, and not cherry picking your opponents to make your record look good.
