Schaefer: Deontay Wilder vs. Dereck Chisora still not a done deal

chisora434By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is saying that the June 15th fight between unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) and the non-top 15 ranked contender Dereck Chisora (16-4, 10 KO’s) isn’t a done deal despite the fight having been announced earlier Thursday.

Dan Rafael said on his twitter: “Schaefer on Wilder-Chisora: ‘[Warren] wanted a quote from me for the press conference but I wouldn’t give it to them because it wasn’t done. We sent them like four 4 emails telling them not to announce it and sure enough they go and announce it.’”

This would be a huge disappointment for a lot of American boxing fans if the fight doesn’t get made because it would be interesting for them to see the 6’7” Deontay add Chisora’s scalp to his collection.

A scalp like that would be nice, especially if Deontay could take Chisora out quicker than David Haye did and look more impressive than WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko did in beating Chisora one-handed last year.

It’s unclear what the hold-up is in the negotiations, but it really doesn’t matter if the fight gets made or not because Deontay has much bigger and better things to accomplish in his career than beating up on guys that have lost four out of their last fix fights like Chisora has.

This fight is barely interesting in the big scheme of things because Deontay has so much more to accomplish with his career than just beating up on another 2nd tier fighter like Chisora. He already beat British heavyweight last money in Audley Harrison and that one lasted less than one round. Chisora is about the same as Audley in terms of talent, and I just don’t see the gain in taking on him. I’d rather see

If the fight doesn’t get made, Golden Boy will have a good opponent for Deontay to fight in the next month or two. He needs to be stepped up a couple levels and I just don’t see Chisora as being any kind of step up from the guy that Deontay just finished annihilating in Audley Harrison.
