Mayweather Jr: One down, five to go

floyd#28By Dan Henderson: Floyd Mayweather completed the first of six contracted fights on Saturday night, he defeated Robert Guerrero via a unanimous decision after all three ringside judges scored the bout 117-111.

In this article we will look at potential opponents for his last five fights, I must add that these are possible opponents I’m not saying he will definitely fight any of the fighters I’m about to mention.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – This is the fight everyone would want to see but I can’t see it happening and the reason why is that Canelo rehydrates to such a big weight come fight night so before Floyd would face him he’d have to agree to come down to 147lbs with a rehydration limit of 160lbs and why would Canelo agree to that? He wouldn’t, unless he was solely looking for a payday. In my opinion I’d pick Floyd to win even at 154lbs but at the same time if I were Floyd I’d fight him sooner rather than later because Canelo will only get better.

Manny Pacquiao – This fight would still attract the casual boxing fans even though we as diehard boxing fans know this should have happened in 2009 but someone always had an excuse for why it weren’t going to happen. It’s a shame because this would have been the biggest fight of our generation and would have smashed all PPV records. Can it still happen? Yes if Pacman looked good in his next few fights plus if he let his contract run out with Top Rank then the fight could happen.

Amir Khan – I’ve got a feeling this will be one of the fights because it would sell. Any PPV fight which involves a British fighter will do well, you also look at the WBC moving Khan up to no2 in their welterweight rankings which leads me to believe that this could happen.

Devon Alexander – A nice unification fight between two American welterweights? Not really but if Devon was to beat Kell Brook when they finally fight and possibly one more ranked welterweight then this could definitely happen. In my opinion it’d be a tough fight to sell but I’ve seen worse do more than a million buys on PPV.

Miguel Cotto – In what will most likely be Floyd’s next fight. I can see it now ‘Cotto gave me my toughest fight yet but I’ll beat him more convincingly this time’ plus you know the Puerto Rican fans adore Cotto just like us Brits adored Ricky Hatton so it would definitely sell.

Sergio Martinez – Not going to happen, Floyd will not step up to 160lbs and Martinez ain’t coming down to 154lbs. Even if this was at catch weight of 157lbs it wouldn’t happen because Floyd doesn’t nor did he ever have any attention of fighting Sergio.

Danny Garcia – I can definitely see this happening especially if he comes out of the light welterweight division unbeaten after this mini tournament that Golden Boy Promotions are doing. If he steps up to welterweight as an undefeated champion then it makes all the sense in the world.

So I’ve given you seven names in my list, sure there is more fighters out but I didn’t want to bore you any longer with my minimal knowledge.

Please let me know who you’ll think it could be but I’m sure they’ll be plenty of hatred out there too but in life you’ll always have idiots to contend with.
