By Allan Fox: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) has already figured out what he plans on doing to defeat IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) tonight in their catchweight fight at 141 lbs. at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Matthysse plans on taking the fight to Peterson and beating him in the trenches with big shots. Matthysse, 30, feels he’s got more than enough power to take Peterson out once the two of them starting trading shots.

Matthysse said this as quoted by RingTV “I think can beat him with my power. I know how to get in the best punches to use my power.”
Matthysse sees Peterson as being very similar to Devon Alexander, a fighter that Mattysse lot a 10 round split decision to two years ago in June 2011. Matthysse started slowly in that fight, but then came on big time and appeared to have done enough to get the win.

However, the fight taking place in Alexander’s home state of Missouri, he was given the victory in what many boxing fans saw as a hometown decision. Matthysse no longer starts slowly in his fights after being burned in this fight as well as his fight with Zab Judah.

A fast start for Matthysse could put a lot of pressure on Peterson to stand and trade from the start of the fight, and it’s going to be tough on him to stay in there with the hard hitting Argentinian for 12 rounds. Peterson has been the guy that has worn his opponents down during his 9-year pro career, but he’s facing a really tough opponent tonight.

This is a bad style match-up for Peterson because Matthysse can do everything he can but with more power. This isn’t Amir Khan, Kendall Holt or Victor Ortiz that Peterson is facing tonight. He’s facing a big puncher who never stops coming forward. Peterson isn’t a big puncher himself, so he’s probably not going to much to persuade Matthysse to back off and give him breathing space.
