Khan: Mayweather has too much talent for Guerrero, but I have the game plan for beating Floyd

floyd453By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s career may be on the brink of implosion after losses to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson and a close, close call against 2nd tier fighter Julio Diaz, but that’s not stopping Khan from flapping his gums about tonight’s fight between Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Khan is going with the safe pick in choosing Mayweather to come out on top against Guerrero. It’s unclear if Khan is doing this because he really believes Mayweather is the more talented fighter of because Guerrero trash talked him in the past, but he seems to think Mayweather will win this one.

Khan said to thesun.co.uk “Guerrero’s a tough guy but skill-wise, he’s not in the same league as Mayweather. I have a great team around me and we have the game plan for defeating Mayweather.”

That’s actually quite amusing that Khan thinks he can beat Mayweather.

Khan will be at tonight’s fight at ringside at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, in hopes of getting the Mayweather fight next September.

Sadly, I can actually see Khan getting the fight if Mayweather wins it, but what a god awful fight that will be. Khan just finished going life and death with Julio Diaz, a former IBF lightweight champion who is 8 years past his prime. I mean, I had Diaz beating Khan by a close decision, but that’s not the important thing. The thing that is important is that Khan went life and death with a past his prime Diaz, and the fight pretty showed that Khan is really slipping as a fighter.

There’s no improvement in his game, as he still gets easily nailed with left hooks, and he still can’t take hard shots without getting staggered or dropped. I think a Khan-Mayweather fight would be good for Mayweather, but bad for Khan. He’d get the biggest payday of his career but it might not be as much as you’d think.

If Guerrero is getting only $3 million guaranteed for his fight tonight against Mayweather, then I can’t see Khan getting much more than that. I guess there’s the pay per view upset for Khan where he’d make some good green cash from a Mayweather fight, but what a terrible fight for boxing fans.

Khan has lost two out of his last four fights, and you really can’t count his wins over Diaz and Carlos Molina as being actual wins because those were 2nd tier fighters that Golden Boy Promotions found to try and stop the bleeding from Khan in terms of his career death spiral.

Had Golden Boy put Khan in with an actual contender like Lucas Matthysse, I think we wouldn’t even be talking about Khan right now other than saying what a waste of a career.
