Hughie Fury defeats Moses Matovu

By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (3-0, 2 KO’s) labored past journeyman Moses Matovu (4-27-3) in beating him by a 4 round points decision on Tuesday night at the City Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Referee John Lowery scored the fight 40-36 for Fury.

For the most part the 6’6” Hughie used his jab to control the action from the outside, and was effective from limiting some of the incoming from Matovu.

Occasionally, Fury would throw a left hook and a chopping right hand with mean intentions, but the power wasn’t nearly enough to bother Matovu, who took the shots without any problems.

In rounds two and three, Matovu began to find Fury with right hands and back him up. It was somewhat surprising given that Matovu doesn’t have a knockout on his resume and lacks power, but never the less, Hughie gave ground and looked to be playing it safe.

The fight ended with an uneventful fourth round with Fury throwing a lot of jabs and fighting safety first. I was wondering why he wasn’t going all out to try and stop Matovu because this is the same fighter that had been stopped by light heavyweight Shawn Hawk, one of WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly’s recent knockout victims.

I think it might have been some of the hard shots that Matavu hit Fury with in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that made him play it safe in the 4th.

Overall, it was a decent performance from Hughie. He did what he had to do to get the win. Was it impressive? No. I wasn’t wowed by his performance, but he got the win and maybe he’ll improve in the future if he can develop his punching power and hand speed.

I still rate him above his cousin Tyson Fury in talent, but he lacks the power needed for him to get to the top right now.

Other boxing results on the card:

Kevin O’Hara pts 8 Michael Kelly
John Hutchinson RD 3 Gerard Healy
Marco McCullough TKO 3 Noel O’Brien
Jamie Kennedy pts 4 Willie Mitchell
Philip Sutcliffe Jnr TKO 2 Liam Finn
