Froch says he’s #1 fighter in British history; Calzaghe tears into him

froch644By Scott Gilfoid: It’s just what I was afraid of; IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s close 12 round unanimous decision victory over past his best Mikkel Kessler last Saturday night seems to have gone to Froch’s head because now he’s talking about being the best fighter in Great Britain history.

Former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe took issue with Froch’s bragging and tore into him big time.

Here’s what Froch had to say about himself at the bbc.co.uk: “In Great Britain I’m number one. It’s between me and Lennox Lewis, depending on how far you go back.

Oh boy, Froch really self-promoting in a big way. How come I’m not surprised? I knew he’d magnify his win over Kessler and make more of it than what there really is. He beats a fading fighter that didn’t look like he had the heart for it, and now he’s talking about being the best British boxer ever.

Calzaghe responded to Froch’s bragging, saying to the southwalesargus.co.uk “It’s an absolute joke of a comment…The guy is highly, highly delusional if he believes that. Carl is not even the best super middleweight in the world today.”

Calzaghe went on to say that Andre Ward is the best in the world at 168, but he hardly needed to say that because it’s pretty clear to anyone who follows boxing that he’s the best.

I don’t really care too much about who’s the best boxer in British history, but it is funny to see Froch patting himself on the back and making a big deal about himself after his very close win over a nearly shot Kessler. If that’s the best that Froch could do against a past his best Kessler then what does that say about Froch?

Froch was fighting at home in the UK and he STILL barely beat Kessler in that fight. Had Kessler come to really put on the line, I think he would have the instead of just standing around the first four rounds and letting Froch build up a big lead. If Kessler had a good trainer like Floyd Mayweather Sr. putting a fire under his backside, I think Kessler would have won the fight.
