By Jose Mendoza: Since Floyd Mayweather Jr’s last fight where he totally outclassed Robert “The Ghost “ Guerrero, the talks of a potential bout with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has been very high. While that would be and right now is the most interesting match that I see for Floyd right now, there are a few problems that don’t sit well with me.
First who is Canelo to say he will ONLY fight Mayweather at 154 pounds. Correct me if I’m wrong but he’s the one calling out Mayweather not the other way around. I know you guys are gone say “well he went to 154 to fight Cotto.” Yes, that is true but Cotto also doesn’t blow up to a huge 170-180 lbs. the next day and Floyd was the one who called out Cotto so it was only right you go to his weight division and fight him.
Next lets take a look at the past opponents Alvarez has faced, there was Austin Trout, Josesito Lopez, Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron, Alonso Gomez, Ryan Rhodes and Matthew Hatton. The only legitimate fight there was Austin Trout who was still outweighed. So if there was a fight between Mayweather and Alvarez then is it right or fair for Mayweather to give up nearly 25 lbs.
Canelo should be fighting somebody like Chad Dawson, Andre Ward or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Finally if you compare their records which Mayweather is 44-0 and Alvarez is 42-0, its clear to see that Alvarez has been fighting guys smaller than him and none that ever posed a threat. If he wants the fight then he needs to do what it takes to get the best, just like Miguel Cotto did to get a shot at Pacquio which was coming down to 145 lbs.
