Andre Ward to Froch’s promoter: Pick up the phone if you want a fight

ward54By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward called IBA/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s bluff after learning that Froch said he was interested in fighting him if Ward would be willing to come to the UK to fight Froch in front of a mass of his British fans. Ward told Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn to contact him if he wants to make the fight.

Ward said on his social media site to Eddie Hearn: “It’s very simple. Pick up the phone, Eddie Hearn!!”

I think it’s safe to say that phone won’t be picked up by Hearn to call Ward. Heck, Froch has had two years to try and get a rematch with Ward after being royally whipped by him in the Super Six tournament in 2011, and Froch hasn’t lifted a finger to try and avenge his defeat to him. So why would anything be different now that Froch has beaten Mikkiel Kessler in their rematch tonight. Nothing will change.

Froch will continue to name drop Ward’s name to get media and fan attention but then he’ll still not choose to fight him. Froch and Eddie both know what would happen if Froch faces Ward again. He’d get beaten even worse than the first time, and that in turn would wreak havoc with Froch’s legacy.

That’s why I see Froch looking to fight Kessler again and then maybe Bernard Hopkins because those are fights that Froch can possibly win. I don’t like Froch’s chances against Hopkins, but for that fight to happen, Hopkins will have to come to the UK to fight Froch. I like Froch’s chances in the UK, oh yeah, but not in a neutral venue.

I wish Eddie Hearn would surprise me by calling Ward and putting in an effort to try and put a fight together between Froch and Ward next, but that’s just now how Hearn makes his matches. He already said previously that he doesn’t like to put fights together when his fighter has a good chance of losing. Hearn obviously has seen the Froch-Ward fight and he probably has a good idea how badly Froch would do in a second fight with Ward.
