Trout: Canelo’s team don’t have confidence in him

trout11By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) maintains that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya didn’t want WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s), who Trout sometimes refers to as Golden Boy’s “Golden Goose,” to fight him. Trout sees that as a sign that Schaefer and De La Hoya don’t have confidence Canelo.

Trout said “I know, as you know, De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer tried to not make this fight happen at every turn…They tried hard not to make a fight, but I wonder how they must feel for him knowing that your team doesn’t have the utmost confidence in you. I don’t know that feeling. My team believes in me.”

Trout went on to say that Alfredo Angulo was being mentioned as a possible opponent for Canelo instead of himself. Trout believes the fight wouldn’t have happened had Canelo not spoke up and insisted on the fight taking place.

Trout also was amused that Canelo’s team wanted a rematch clause for him in case he loses to Trout. Canelo would get a rematch with Trout, but if Trout loses he won’t get a rematch. Trout says he doesn’t mind that Canelo has a rematch clause because it just means he’s going to end up fighting Canelo twice and he likes that idea. But he also sees that as another telltale sign that Canelo’s team doesn’t have confidence in him that he can win this fight because if they did they wouldn’t ask for a rematch clause.

On April 20th, Canelo and Trout will meet at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Trout doesn’t care that there will be over 30,000 Canelo fans because he doesn’t see them as having any impact about what goes on in the ring on that night. Canelo points out that the fans can’t even give Canelo a drink of water if he’s thirsty between rounds and they can’t protect him in the ring from him.

You do have to wonder why Schaefer and De La Hoya were so reluctant for Canelo to fight Trout. These guys are experts at knowing their fighters and what they’re capable of doing in the ring. Why would they want Canelo to avoid Trout if they weren’t worried about him losing to him and getting humbled?
