Steven Pearce vs. Sam Eggington on Friday, May 3rd
By Daniel Mole
Steven Pearce is ready for war when he goes toe-to-toe with Sam Eggington for the Midlands Area Welterweight Title at The Venue in Dudley on Friday, 3rd May 2013.
Area Champion Pearce (7-1) makes a first defence of his title against fellow Stourbridge scrapper, Eggington (4-1), and, with their come-forward style, Pearce is expecting a real tear up.
“It’s going to be some fight,” 28 year-old Pearce told www.uko-boxing.com. “We’re both game fighters who enjoy a tear up and we’re both really hungry for success.
“I want to keep my title and move on to bigger and better things and Sam wants to win the title to push on too. It’s going to be a war.
“We’ll both go at it from the start and the fans will be in for a treat. I can’t wait.”
Eggington represents a tough first defence for ‘The Fierce’. Although the 19 year-old has only had five professional fights, he had a strong amateur career and has made a solid start to life in the professional ranks.
However, Pearce believes that, as Champion, he should defend against the best on offer and, in his mind, that fighter is Eggington.
“I’m not a fighter who wants to be spoon fed,” he added. “I’m a Champion and I think that, as Champion, you should fight whoever is put in front of you. That’s what Champions do.
“Are there easier fights out there for me than Sam Eggington? Yes, of course there are. At the moment, I can’t see a better lad to go up against than Sam. I have a lot of respect for him. We’re mates outside the ring but we’ll be enemies in it.
“Sam has never gone past four rounds, so this is a step up for him. He’s never faced someone with my power and work-rate either. I won’t be letting my title go.”
Tickets are priced at £30 unreserved seating and £60 Ringside to include a three-course meal (tables of ten). They are available from The Venue Box Office on 01384 453 101.
The undercard features the return of Cradley featherweight Chris Male (11-1), plus Dudley light-middleweight prospect, Kyle Spencer (5-0), Dudley lightweight Rizwan Rasool (2-0), West Bromwich light-middleweight, Adam Corbett (3-1), Dudley featherweight Dean Anderson (5-2) and Birmingham super-middleweight Andrew Robinson (5-0).
