Schaefer: No decisions on Canelo’s next fight until after Mayweather-Guerrero fight

canelo6By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he won’t be making any decisions about the next fight for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez until after the May 4th fight between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, according to Steve Kim.

The most likely next opponent for Canelo’s next fight is Miguel Cotto in September. Schaefer mentioned that Cotto is a possibility, but he wants to wait for the Mayweather-Guerrero fight outcome so that he can make a stab at trying to get Mayweather or Guerrero to fight Canelo next.

Getting Guerrero to take the fight with Canelo would be easy because Guerrero would take the fight in a second. Unfortunately, if Guerrero beats Mayweather there will be a rematch because Mayeather has a rematch clause in his contract, so Schaefer is only going to get Guerrero for September if he loses to Mayweather next month.

Schaefer no doubt wants to make a fight between Canelo and Mayweather badly because it would bring a lot of money to Golden Boy. However, Golden Boy doesn’t have the power to push Mayweather into fights that he doesn’t want or need. It makes sense for Golden Boy to make the fight because they promote Guerrero and it would be a very lucrative fight for their company, but Mayweather has a big six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS that pays him in the neighborhood of $30 million per fight no matter who he faces.

Why should Mayweather fight a guy that is roughly two divisions above him in weight like Canelo when he can fight guys in his own weight class or maybe just below it. Canelo’s a big junior middleweight and arguably more of a middleweight than a junior middleweight. Last night in Canelo’s 12 round unanimous decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, Canelo came into the fight weighing 172 lbs.

That’s heavier than what WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin came in for his recent win over Nobuhiro Ishida. When you have a junior middleweight that’s out-weighing middleweight champions, then it’s kind of hard to ask someone like Mayweather to fight Canelo unless he’s willing to melt down to 147 and then agree to a rehydration limit that would keep him from weighing more than 155 for the weight.

Believe me, I think a fight between Canelo weighing 155 and Mayweather weighing 150 would be more than fair. If Canelo wants the fight then those should be the conditions for the fight. If Canelo comes in over the limit, the fight is off.
