Marquez rides into sunset on Pacquiao

marquez5By Robert Elmore: Juan Manuel Marquez took his family, his money and possibly his greatest victory ever, got on his horse and began to ride off into the sunset. “You’re a coward. Why don’t you give Manny Pacquiao a rematch? He gave you a chance to fight him in a third match”, several boxing fans screamed. Marquez unsaddled and starred back at them and yelled “I don’t owe him anything.”

Marquez finally ended any doubts in the minds of many boxing fans who was the better fighter between him and his nemeses Manny Pacquiao. There had been so much controversy between these two with many giving Pac the nod based on compubox numbers. The other fans gave Marquez the nod because many felt he landed the cleaner shots and simply out boxed the Filipino star. Manny had choices outside of Marquez, but chose the Mexican star because he had just as much to prove as Marquez. It really didn’t matter what the fans thought. The judges had the final say.

In the 4th fight, Marquez, bloody nose and all, decided to let his fists be the judges. This time Marquez wasn’t looking to out-box Pacquiao because he had already done that in their previous fights. He sacrificed his defense and looked for the bomb. And in the 6th round, he landed one the most vicious shots in boxing history leaving Pacquiao face down for minutes. Since then, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has been trying to woo Marquez into a 5th fight.

Marquez has shot the idea down on several occasions. Good for him. A 5th fight will certainly create a 6th match with the decision I believe going to Pacquiao just to keep the series going. This would mean Marquez would need another knockout just because the judges have not be so kind to him. He is now setting his sights on a 5th divisional and likely against WBO champ Tim Bradley. The fight should be easy to make seeing how both fighters are promoted by Top Rank.

Marquez ignored the fans, readjusted his hat, and re-saddled himself back on his horse and rode off into the sunset with his family and one the greatest decisions he’s ever made; Not to face Pacquaio. Ride young man. Ride.
