Kessler: I’ll retire if I lose to Froch on May 25th

Kessler#14By Scott Gilfoid: Taking a page out of the Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) playbook, WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) is vowing to retire if he loses next month on May 25th to Froch at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

“If I lose, I’m going to quit. If I lose fair and square I am out of here, but I’m not going to lose, I am going to win.”

I have no idea why Kessler would retire if he loses the fight because chances are he could wind up getting royally jobbed much like Andre Dirrell did when he ventured into Froch territory in the UK. Why retire if most of the boxing world feels that you won the fight?

Kessler needs to change his outlook for the fight because going in with a defeatist attitude could bring about all the things he’s hoping to avoid. He of all people should be coming into this fight supremely confident given the way he beat Froch last time. Kessler beat Froch at his own game by slugging with him last time and pretty much forced him into backing off and putting him on the run. If Kessler was able to do that last time he fought Froch then he should be able to do it to him again by doing the exact same thing.

Froch has already been flapping his gums about wanting to throw 6-punch combinations and such. That’ll make Kessler’s job easier because he won’t have to chase Froch all over creation just to land his shots.

Froch will be bringing the fight to him and all Kessler will have to do is meet him with the same kinds of power shots as he did last time. Andre Ward was really giving it to Froch in the Super Six tournament and he had Froch looking at the referee at times for help when he was getting the worst of it on the inside.
