brookj3432By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF welterweight contender Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) won’t be able to make the May 18th fight against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Brook, 26, has a stress fracture in his right foot and the injury won’t be healed by the time the fight was scheduled to take place. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is looking to have the fight re-scheduled but it remains to be seen whether the International Boxing Federation will let the fight take place of it they’ll insert the next ranked contender to get a shot against Alexander.

This is Brook’s second injury while getting ready for the fight. Previously, Brook injured his ankle last January, causing his scheduled fight against Alexander to be postponed. Now, Brook has another injury and it remains unclear whether the IBF will keep giving Brook chances.

At some point they’re going to have to let Alexander move forward with his career because he can’t waste his prime using up an entire year waiting for Brook’s body to stay together long enough for them to fight.

Hearn said to Sky Sports News “Kell has recently developed right foot pain. Following specialist review and investigations over the last ten days, he has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of his right fourth metatarsal and a further injury of his right navicular, both of which required ongoing treatment including withdrawal from full training…We will speak with Golden Boy and hope to re-schedule the bout.”

Oh man, look at this. Hearn trying to re-schedule the fight. I think Golden Boy and the IBF need to get together on this and look for a replacement for Brook to become the new IBF mandatory challenger. Brook has had two chances and he’s blown it both times. It’s time that the IBF find someone that can stay healthy long enough for Alexander to finally get his mandatory defense out of the way because he’s already used up the first four months of this year waiting for Brook’s aches and pains to heal.

Golden Boy plans on having Alexander still fight on the May 18th date and they’re going to find a replacement for the injured Brook. Golden Boy may move the co-feature bout between Lucas Matthysse vs. Lamont Peterson to the main event because it’s doubtful that they’re going to be able to find a quality replacement to face Alexander with just one month to go before the fight.
