chisora433By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Derek Chisora (15-4, 9 KO’s) has a nice little mismatch on April 20th with him fighting 37-year-old journeyman Hector Alfredo Avila (20-12-1, 13 KO’s) in a schedule 10 round bout on the Nathan Cleverly vs. Robin Krasniqi card at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

You kind of know that the 29-year-old Chisora was going to be given a soft touch for him to fight given that he hadn’t fought since being stopped in the 5th round last year in July but you’d like to see him facing better opposition than this because this is kind of ridiculous, but again I’m not surprised.

Chisora has lost four out of his last five fights and he’s quickly heading for the same journeyman status as his opponent Avila. His promoter is going to need to boost Chisora up in a major way by having him fight Avila types for the next couple of years if he wants to get Chisora back to where he was before he started getting beaten left and right by guys.

There’s talk that Chisora could wind up facing British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price if Chisora wins his fight with Avila and Price defeats Tony Thompson in their rematch in July. There’s just too many ifs involved for my taste and I tend to think it’ll never happen or at least it won’t happen anytime soon because I expect Price to lose to Thompson again.

Chisora will beat Avila but who cares? Look at the type of opponent they had to find for him in order to get him back on the winning track.

Chisora has lost to Tyson Fury, Robert Helenius, Vitali Klitschko and Haye in the last two years. It doesn’t matter that Chisora was competitive with the badly injured Vitali and Heenius. The fact of the matter is he lost both fights and that’s all that matters.
