Chavez Jr. wants Martinez rematch and then Golovkin

chavez91By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) doesn’t want to waste any time with his career. After his planned fight on June 15th or June 22nd against likely Darren Barker, Chavez Jr. wants to face WBC middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez in a rematch followed by a unification bout against Gennady Golovkin, according to The Record.

Chavez Jr. said to record.com.mx “If I could get the first fight against Maravilla and then against Golovkin. First I’m going to beat Sergio Martinez and then go for the European one [Golovkin].”

Sadly, Chavez Jr’s dreams of him beating either of these guys are unlikely to happen. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Chavez Jr. loses to Darren Barker in June because that’s going to be a really tough fight for him because Barker is a natural middleweight and Chavez Jr. is more of a cruiserweight that dehydrates down 30 pounds to fight at 160. Sooner or later taking off that weight is going to catch up to Chavez Jr. and leave him too weak to fight at his optimal level.

Chavez Jr. says he’s going to recapture the WBC middleweight title and then become the best fighter in the division by beating Golovkin.

Just getting the rematch with Sergio Martinez is going to be a major ordeal for Chavez Jr. because Martinez wants full random drug testing for the fight and thus far it’s unknown whether Chavez Jr. will agree to that. There’s also word that Martinez will want a rehydration limit so that Chavez Jr. doesn’t gain 30 pounds after making the 160 pound weight limit.

Martinez doesn’t rehydrate more than 10 pounds, and you understand why he’d be a little reluctant to fight a guy that rehydrates from 160 to 190 because we’re talking a fighter that is a cruiserweight instead of a middleweight.

The way that Chavez Jr. was dominated by Martinez last year in his 12 round unanimous decision loss, I can’t see Chavez Jr. beating Martinez this year. It’s possible if the fight were to take place in a couple of years when Martinez is 40-years-old, Chavez Jr. might be able to win, but that’s the only way I could see him winning. He’s got to wait Martinez out until he’s an old man to beat him and that’s not what the plan is. Chavez Jr. wants to fight Martinez in September or October.
