Canelo’s controversial win over Trout will make a Mayweather fight more difficult to make

007 AlamoDome_+StephanieTrapp_KR6A4698(Photo credit: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: With that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) was given a questionable 12 round unanimous over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) tonight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, I think it might make it extremely difficult for Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions to set up a fight between the 22-year-old orange-haired Canelo and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The reason being is that Canelo needed to win the fight beyond question and he failed to do that tonight. The win is tainted in the minds of many fans. The main exceptions seem to be Canelo’s preexisting fans, who will back him through thick and thin.

Getting a controversial decision has kept Golden Boy’s “Golden Goose” unbeaten but it could come at a cost by keeping him from getting the Mayweather fight.

Mayweather isn’t going to want to fight Canelo with him coming off of a controversial decision because Mayweather never fights opponents that are coming off of losses or controversial decisions. Mayweather only fights guys that are winning and not getting gift decisions given to them in the state of Texas with their open scoring.

If you think Canelo doesn’t need a fight with Mayweather for him to become a big star think again. Canelo isn’t going to be another Mayweather because he’s only fought one good opponent in his entire career with Austin Trout, and he couldn’t beat him without controversy. That’s going to keep Canelo from being a star.

Canelo needs Mayweather but he can’t get the fight until he proved he can beat Trout without controversy, and that’s probably not going to happen because Golden Boy Promotions are going to move Canelo forward to a fight against the past his prime Miguel Cotto. That fight won’t do anything for Canelo. It’ll be like Canelo vs. the over-the –hill Kermit Cintron.
Canelo needs Mayweather and he’s probably not going to get that fight until he faces Trout again.

I scored the fight 118-109 for Trout with him winning 10 rounds, losing 1 round and with 1 even round. The judges scored it 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109. The fight was held in Texas, and I’m not surprised that Canelo was given a decision because I always felt that Trout needed a knockout to get a fair shake.
