Canelo Alvarez: What Boxing Needs

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABy Mohammed Abulkhair: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez improved his record tonight to (42-0-1-31KO’S) by putting a masterful performance against the slick southpaw Austin “No Doubt” Trout. Canelo even though at the ripe age of 22 showed spectacular boxing skill and ring generalship. Many writers and critics believed that Canelo was a little over his head in taking this fight.

Some argued that Canelo does not have the defense or the footwork to compete with Trout. Canelo has definitely silenced his critics as he showed spectacular defense bobbing and weaving and at times making Trout look like an amateur missing with many jabs.

Canelo could have knocked Trout out in the 7th with a straight right that made Trout wobble and fall; however, Trout came back and showed a little more aggression. Canelo was landing the cleaner and more solid punches and he was able to stun Trout a couple of times throughout the fight.

After the fight Trout admitted that Canelo was the better man, and the better man won. Canelo is what boxing needs; he has the charisma, fan base, skill, and is a respectful gentleman.

I believe Canelo is the best at 154 at this moment, and I do not see any fighter that can beat him at jr middleweight. Many boxers who are at the age of 22 still have a lot to learn, however, Canelo looked like a veteran in the ring he seemed to have Trout confused by round 8 with missing many of his jabs.

If Canelo wants a challenge he either needs to move down to 147 and fight Floyd Mayweather, or move up to middleweight and challenge Martinez or Golovkin. I believe that Canelo will do well against any of the top fighters who are in the pound for pound list and possibly give Mayweather a run for his money and the toughest fight of his career.
