Bernstein: Will Guerrero rough up Mayweather on May 4th?

guerrero322By Dan Ambrose: Showtime analyst Al Bernstein wonders whether WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) will be able to rough up, smother and take the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) out of his game in their fight in two weeks in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Guerrero is coming off of a fight where he roughed up former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto all night and was able to successfully get away with it with a referee failing to do anything other than warn Guerrero.

Bernstein said “Will he [Guerrero] smother Mayweather’s punches and rough him up. Rough house tactics will be a part of it.”

You’ve got to figure that if the roughing up of the much faster Berto worked last time out to even the playing field and give the slower Guerrero an advantage, he’ll likely try the same thing on May 4th against Mayweather and basically dare the referee to do anything about it.

If you look at most referees, they tend to warn but then do nothing much else besides that, especially when it comes to important fights. They don’t want to be the center of attention, so they often fail to take points away for fighters that foul.

Mayweather can deal with Guerrero’s fouling as long as he doesn’t perch himself with his back against the ropes like he’s done in a number of his recent fights. If Mayweather does that then he’ll basically be putting himself in position to where Guerrero will be able to hold and hit, throw elbows or whatever to his hearts’ content unless the referee does something about it.
