Angel Garcia says no to 140 lb. tournament; Khan can’t sit at the throne

khan4321By Scott Gilfoid: Angel Garcia, the father for WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, says that he doesn’t know anything about there being an unofficial 140 pound tournament being held by Golden Boy Promotions, according thaboxingvoice.com. Angel says that Danny Garcia is going to fight whoever he wants after he gets past Zab Judah on April 27th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, has recently been saying that the winner of the Judah vs. Garcia fight and the Lucas Matthysse vs. Lamont Peterson fight will face each other, and then the winner of that fight will then fight Amir Khan later in the year, provided that Khan gets past his April 27th fight against 2nd tier fighter Julio Diaz.

The way that it’s set up, Khan would have to do very little to get to the finals of the tournament, whereas the guy that he’d be facing would have had to win two potentially hard fights. If it were Matthysse, for example, he’d have to beat Lamont Peterson on May 18th and then turn around and face the winner of the Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah fight.

You can guess that it would be Danny Garcia that Matthysse would face and that’s another tough fight. So if Matthysse wins that fight as well, then he’d finally get to face Khan. But you can understand why it would seem a tad unfair because Matthysee would have two really toughs, while Khan would only have to beat Julio Diaz, who isn’t even ranked in the top 15 at welterweight.

Angel Garcia said to thaboxingvoice.com “That’s [the 140 lb. tournament] all rumors. I haven’t heard anything about that. How do you [Khan] get to sit at the throne like you’re the king of the world…when you ain’t even the champion?”

I totally agree with Mr. Garcia. How does Khan get to sit on the throne and wait out his opponent like he’s the king while his eventual opponent will have had to fight two incredibly hard fights against top tier opposition just to get the chance to fight him? That just seems wrong. Khan should be in the thick of things as well, and not just sitting on the top and waiting if and when he gets past Julio Diaz this month.
