Why do some of Canelo’s fans have a hard time accepting that he may lose to Trout?

Web-P3142517By Dan Ambrose: I’ve noticed that when you discuss the possibility of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) losing his April 20th fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) Austin Trout, some of Canelo’s fans start to lash out and name call. Is it because Canelo has orange hair that his fans react some bitterly?

It’s hard to understand what makes Canelo’s loyal fan base get testy when you point out he’s in trouble in the Trout bout. It’s better to tell the truth about Canelo than to build him up based on nothing. You don’t see this when other Mexican fighters are critiqued like Juan Manuel Marquez, and it makes you wonder what exactly it is about the red-haired Canelo that causes some of his fans to want to insult when you point out the possibility that he may lose and lose badly to Trout in this fight.

What’s the big deal? It’s not as if Canelo is infallible and walk on water. Let’s be real about this. Canelo arguably should already have one loss on his record because the draw he was given against Jorge Juarez in 2006 was a fight that I had Canelo winning only one round. It’s like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with his draw that he got early in his career against Carlos Molina. Chavez Jr. should have lost that fight, but somehow the judges gave a draw.

I really don’t care whether Trout or Canelo wins their April 20th fight, but I have to admit it’s not looking good for Canelo because he’s just too one-dimensional to beat a fighter like the southpaw Trout. Canelo’s fighting style, which is pretty basic and old fashioned, it just the type of style that Trout excels against. Trout eats up flat-footed brawlers like Canelo, and that’s just the way it is.

Canelo is like a little tank. He’ll do well against a guy that have their feet glued to the floor and can’t move, but against a fighter that has long arms and uses his jabbing and moving like Trout, Canelo is going to get to get schooled in this fight, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Complaining about or lashing out won’t change what’s going to happen on April 20th. Canelo will probably lose that fight and look terrible in doing so.

The good news is it’ll only be one loss for Canelo, so he’ll be able to move on with his career, and with the help of some soft match-making by his promoters at Golden Boy, I can see Canelo picking up another junior middleweight title in the near future. But Golden Boy is going to have to keep him away from guys that can box and move like Trout and Floyd Mayweather Jr. because Canelo is too much of an old fashioned plodder to beat guys like that. Eventually is going to get mowed down by a slugger with even better power than him that will beat him at his own game the same way that George Foreman destroyed Joe Frazier, but you can bet that Golden Boy will make sure that happens far, far into the future by matching Canelo carefully after he loses to Trout.
