Ward or Mayweather

floyd43By Stevie Ocallaghan:One of the big debates that always rages on is who is the pound for pound champ. Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Andre Ward, a K brother, even Adrien Broner is now getting caught in the mix. For me No 1 has to go to Andre Ward. Ward entered the super 6, not as the favorite but as a contender. He fought and beat the best in probably the most hotly contested division out there. This is my reasoning.Ward fought and beat all the top guys, guys who were world champs and after losing to Ward, went on to be again a belt holder.

Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, who he stopped, a feat that Joe Calzaghe couldn’t do, proves the level of competition that Ward fought at. Now a lot of people will say Floyd Mayweather. Yes, he’s still undefeated but really, what makes him no 1? A win against an old Shane Mosley, a debatable win against the semi retired Oscar De La Hoya, a cheap shot win against Victor Ortiz. No. The Mayweather who destroyed Arturo Gatti would be considered, but a guy who fights once a year and not against his mandatory, no. Under his new contract he has to up it to two fights a year and we know Floyd doesn’t like being told what to do.

Manny Pacquiao who has had more titles at more weights than anybody is arguably up there, but now a fight with Mayweather really doesn’t matter. Manny, if he really wants to continue, needs a win against Mayweather, but he is 2 years past his best.

Nonito Donaire , Chris John, guys who are great fighters, Wladimir Klitchko has pretty much tied up the heavyweight division, even though there are some good up an comers, but he insists on defending against guys who are maybe 10 or 15 in the world. Andre Ward beat all the guys who where 1, 2, 3, 4 etc then beat, ok a weight drained Dawson but easily beat Dawson all the same.

If you want to talk about pound for pound best, talk about the guy who beats the best, not a guy who fights past there best fighters, or a guy who likes to pick on good but young fighters, pick a guy who beat the best in there prime. That has got to be Andre Ward
