Trout: I’m glad the public forced Canelo to fight me

austin1(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) believes it was only through the boxing public’s help that he was able to land a unification fight against the fighter he’s dubbed Golden Boy Promotion’s “Golden Goose” WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on April 20th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Trout feels that Canelo wasn’t going to take the fight, and his promoters at Golden Boy certainly weren’t going to allow him to take the fight until the public pressure got to be so much that Canelo had to take the fight in order to not be seen as afraid.

Trout said to lscun.com “I’m glad the public was loud enough to force Canelo to put his fought down.”

It’s sad how Canelo, who was hoping to face Miguel Cotto if he were able to beat Trout in their fight last December, started to drag his heals as soon as it was Trout that emerged as the winner of that fight. Instead of stepping up immediately and agreeing to face Trout, there was a long period of time before Canelo finally agreed to fight Trout.

Trout said “I’ve fought Mexican fighters my whole life, I think I was born for this.”

So, Trout has been beating Mexican fighters his whole life while living in Las Cruces, New Mexico. That’s not a good thing for Canelo because it means that Trout knows exactly how to beat the Mexican Canelo and unless Caneo is able to change his game to be not so predictable on offense and defense, he’s going to get schooled by the southpaw Trout.

In looking at Trout’s resume, I noticed that he does have a lot of Mexican names that he’s beaten since turning pro eight years ago in 2005, one of them being Canelo’s older brother Rigoberto Alvarez, who Trout easily beat by a 12 round unanimous decision two years ago. Canelo says he wants to avenge his brother’s loss, but it could cause him to fight with anger instead of intelligence, and believe me Canelo is going to need to fight smart against Trout if he doesn’t want to get out-boxed on April 20th.
