Groves wants Froch bout

groves442242By Scott Gilfoid: If IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch can get past WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler on May 25th, and if George Groves can win his next two fights on Saturday, March 9th against Dario German Balmaceda (11-6-2, 7 KO’s) and on May 25th, then Groves would like the chance to fight Froch later in the year.

Groves said to thesun.co.uk “He’s only looking at big fights now but if Eddie promotes me correctly, like he says he will, it’ll be a big fight against me…It would be a good fight, an entertaining fight.”

Groves needs to think in more realistic terms for possible opponents because Froch isn’t going to face him. Even if Froch beats Kessler on May 25th, he’s then going to be looking to face either former IBF champion Lucian Bute or WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

If Froch doesn’t face those guys, then he’ll take on Adonis Stevenson. He’s not going to defend his title against an opponent like Groves because there’s no gain for Froch. It would be a no win situation for him because Groves is totally unproven at this point in his career, and his best of his five-year pro career is a controversial 12 round majority decision victory over James DeGale in 2011.

A lot of boxing fans saw Groves losing that fight, as did I, and he’s going to need some better wins if he wants to one day lure Froch into a fight. The thing is the only way Groves can get the experience needed to get a fight against Froch is for Groves to beat someone like Ward or Kessler.

It won’t be enough if he beats Arthur Abraham because that guys has already been exposed by Ward, Froch and Andre Dirrell. Groves needs a big win over Kessler and/or Ward to get a fight with Froch, and those guys aren’t likely going to face Groves until builds a fan base and proves that he’s a worthwhile opponent.
