Froch: I’d ruin Groves, he’s domestic level

groves44By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch wasn’t in exactly the friendliest mood in describing George Groves (17-0, 13 KO’s), one of Eddie Hearns’ recent signees. Groves has made it public that he’d like to fight Froch as soon as possible and that he believes that he can beat him. Froch isn’t too thrilled at the idea of facing the young Groves, as he feels he needs more fights under his belt before he’ll be ready to face him.

Froch said to Sky Sports “He needs to sight someone of decent caliber before you can say George Groves beat him, now he’s ready. He’s still very much a domestic level fighter. When he fights an Arthur Abraham or Lucian Bute or someone of that sort of level and wins, then you can start to take him seriously for a fight against me, but not yet. He’s two or three, maybe four fighting someone like me. I’d happily fight him, but I’d ruin him.”

Wow, Froch, tell us how you really feel. I guess those two won’t be buddies at the Matchroom Sport parties.

I honestly like this fight, and I don’t think Froch would ruin Groves. Nah, that wouldn’t happen, but I do believe he’d beat Groves, that’s a given. Froch would probably knock Groves out unless Groves’ trainer Adam Booth came up with a nice safety first survival oriented plan where Groves runs around the ring for 12 rounds, and is satisfied with losing by a lopsided 12 round decision. But if Groves comes to win, he’d get knocked out by Froch if the fight were to happen in the next year or two.

If Groves waits Froch out until he gets near his 40th birthday, I think Groves can win by that point in Froch’s career. I mean, I don’t think Froch will still be fighting, but in theory Groves would likely be able to beat Froch at that point.

Of course, it’s not a good sign that Groves doesn’t have the talent to beat Froch while he’s in his prime. It tells you that Groves will never be in the same class as Froch, and that he’ll likely have to be satisfied at achieving less with his career.

I think Groves is definitely not a domestic level fighter at this point. He’s world class, but he still looks incredibly flawed when it comes to the mental part of the game. He tries too hard to slug and he doesn’t have the chin or the power to be a classic slugger.
