Donaire-Rigondeaux: Nonito should be worried about Guillermo’s power

rigondeaux8By Chris Williams: Ever since the Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) and Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) fight was first put together the focus by many people, including Donaire’s trainer Robert Garcia, is on how much power Donaire has and how he’ll be too strong for the Cuban. However, I think people are forgetting how hard Rigondeaux hits as well.

This isn’t like anyone Donaire has ever faced before, especially lately with the old guys that Donaire’s promoter has been matching him against. Donaire is going to be pasting some serious power from Rigondeaux on April 13th, and it’s not going to be the typical shots that Donaire has been hit with.

Rigondeaux is mostly a body puncher, and those kinds of shots are ones that you really can’t prepare for. Either you have to ability to take body shots or you don’t. Rigondeaux has stopped five out of his last seven opponents, and these guys were no different than Donaire in their ability to take shots.

The difference here was that Rigondeaux went to the body, and these guys couldn’t handle it. I guess if Rigondeaux threw shots at their head, they might have made it the distance with him, but that’s not what he does. Rigondeaux is a body puncher, and those are the kinds of shots that guys can’t handle unless they have an ability to take them.

In looking at Donaire’s soft-looking midsection, I think it’s pretty clear that he’s not someone that is going to do well once Rigondeaux starts hitting him with knife-like left hands. You have to possess a serious six-pack to take the kinds of body shots that Rigondeaux throws, and Donaire has the midsection of a pencil pusher.

There is flab on the sides and a complete absence of muscle tone on Donaire midsection. I’m sure this hasn’t escaped Rigondeaux’s notice. He’s like a scientist inspecting a specimen that he’s going to tear apart under the microscope on April 13th, and I think a lot of boxing fans are going to be feeling foolish for not realizing ahead of time how much power Rigondeaux has.
