Broner: Malignaggi sent the police on me

broner111By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) is claiming that WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is behind his arrest in Miami, Florida on Monday for a case of battery. Broner believes that Malignaggi is so scared to fight him on June 22nd that he contacted the police and then they came down and arrested him over nothing.

Broner said to RingTV “I’m going to beat the s*** out of Paulie. He’s so scared to fight me that he sent some police to arrest me for nothing…he sent somebody to arrest me and put some fake charges on me…the fight is going to happen.”

Malignaggi laughed at Broner’s claims, and says the reason why Broner was arrested was because he got into a “street altercation” over the rental Rolls Royce Broner was driving around Miami on Monday.

Broner still isn’t saying exactly what happened other than blaming it on Malignaggi and saying it was nothing.

Thus far the Broner-Malignaggi fight is still taking place on June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It’s unclear what Broner’s arrest charges will lead to or whether he’ll have to do any time for it. However, he’s going to have to stay clear of getting into any additional problems with the police if he wants to ensure that gets to the fight Malignaggi in June.

Broner is making money and becoming popular, but he’s got to keep his act under control. He’s starting to get a lot of money for his fights and there’s the potential there that it could lead to trouble for the young 23-year-old.

The Malignaggi fight is just the start for Broner. There are much bigger fights out there for him in 2013 and onward. How well he performs in this fight will have a bearing on the kinds of fights that his promoters at Golden Boy put him in. If he struggles against the light hitting Malignaggi then you can expect Broner to be moved back down to 135 to continue to defend his WBC lightweight title until he can pick up the skills needed to compete at 140 and/or 147.
