Thompson wants Fury next

price50By Scott Gilfoid: Having just knocked out Britain’s best heavyweight in David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) in the 2nd round earlier tonight in Liverpool, England, 41-year-old Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) is now targeting #4 WBC British heavyweight Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) to see if he can make a clean sweep of the UK.

If Thompson beats Fury, then there pretty much won’t be anyone left for him to fight in the UK because David Haye on shut down, and just looking for a fight against the Klitschkos before retiring.

A Thompson vs. Fury fight is a natural for both fighters right now because it’ll give Fury a chance to show that he’s a better fighter than Price by beating Thompson. At the same time, it’ll give Thompson a chance to get another nice payday while looking to beat another giant British heavyweight. No one gave Thompson any chance at beating Price.

It looked like such a mismatch going in due to how poor Thompson looked in his previous fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last year in July. However, what boxing fans seemed not to understand was that Thompson looked so poor not because he was over the hill, but because Wladimir was just so good. We saw tonight that Price didn’t have the talent to do what Wladimir did to Thompson.

I think Thompson will give Fury all kinds of problems because Fury doesn’t have the power to worry Thompson, and without power Fury is going to be in a real dog fight against the 6’5” Thompson.

Thompson, being a gracious victor, sees Price as still capable of capturing a world title at some point in his career despite being exposed earlier tonight. We’ll have to see about that because right now it’s not looking good for Price in terms of him capturing a world title during his career.

Fury has a fight coming up on April 20th against Steve Cunningham. We’ll have to see if Fury can get through this, but if he does it’ll be interesting to see if Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy will let him fight Thompson.
